The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of a civilian in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a serious breach of its operational rules and professional standards. The incident, which occurred on April 26, claimed the life of Mr. Mene Ogidi.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations Officer police headquarter Abuja, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, said the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, directed the immediate withdrawal of all officers connected to the incident from the Delta State Command to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.According to the statement, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) has concluded its investigation and found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations guiding the use of firearms.“The findings established unequivocally that the officer’s actions were unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to protect life and uphold the law,” the statement said.
The committee recommended the dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable, a decision that has been approved by the Inspector-General and forwarded to the Police Service Commission for ratification.
The statement added that “upon completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers will be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution for their roles in the extrajudicial shooting.”
Reaffirming the Force’s position, the police said it maintains a zero tolerance stance on abuse of power and unlawful use of force.
“No uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law. Any officer who violates this principle will face the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences,” the statement added. The Inspector-General also extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
“He acknowledges the pain and loss suffered and assures the family that this tragic incident will not be treated lightly. The Force is fully committed to ensuring that justice is not only served but seen to be served,” the statement said.
