• Advocates for Just Transition
Osun State Government in partnership with International Climate Change Development Initiative Africa, and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Nigeria during the week held a One Day Climate Change workshop focusing on ‘Just Transition’.
The workshop which held at Aenon Suites, in Osogbo, the Osun State Capital focused on Empowering communities through inclusive and just transitions.
Just transition addresses various dimensions of inequality, vulnerability, opportunity and enabling social inclusion as well as promoting different forms of equity
Over time, Climate Change has led to extreme increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, floods, and storms.
Speaking at the Workshop, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, who was represented by his Spokesperson , Mallam Olawale Rasheed noted that his administration is committed to establishing strong partnership with stakholders that will help in fighting against climate change and safeguard communities.
He stressed that the focus of the state government is to emerge as the most climate adapted and resilience state within the Africa sub National space.
“We are partnering with NCC, and also in touch with the Federal Ministry of Environment to let them know our aims. We want to be the first sub national entity that is playing the leading role of combating Climate Change crisis. We are also in touch with other stakeholders and NGO”, he added.
Also speaking at the event, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change,
Engr. Moruff Adedapo, in his presentation on the Osun Climate Agenda and Its Implementation strategies, stated that Osun is moving with the right momentum in the right direction on the set goals and agenda.
He highlighted the agenda to include; Creation of a Climate Information Hub and Climate Advocacy Programs; Conservation and Preservation Projects; Establishment of a Climate Data Center at UNIOSUN; Climate mainstreaming (Creation of Climate Action Agency and Climate Change desk in all Agencies of Government in Osun State.
Others are; One house one tree agenda in the State; Massive reforestation and regeneration projects.
He concluded by thanking the partners, participants, and the governor of the state for making this workshop a success.
Other Keynote speakers at the event who spoke on different topics such as Advancing the just transitions in Nigeria, stated that climate change can be addressed through equitable and inclusive transition to low-carbon economies, addressing both distributive and procedural justice.
They appealed to stakholders to promote sustainable development, support environmental protection, ensure social and economic inclusion and enhance global cooperation.
One of the participants, Tolu Lagbenro while appreciating the Osun State Government and other partners noted that the program provided opportunity to understand benefits of just transitions, moving from current practices to advanced level.
