The Zone XI Police Command in Osogbo has arrested one Mrs. Gbemisola Oladepo for allegedly subjecting her five-year-old niece to severe physical abuse.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ade Ogunyemi, confirmed the arrest yesterday, Monday, August 25, disclosing that the suspect was detained after she was invited for questioning over the disturbing case.
“Yes, a case involving physical abuse of a five-year-old girl was reported at our office and the suspect in question was invited over for questioning. She was later detained and will be charged to court soon,” Ogunyemi stated.
According to reports, the victim, who lost her father five years ago, had been in the custody of her aunt, Oladepo, who allegedly subjected her to continuous physical, emotional, and verbal abuse. She was rescued following a report filed by the Monsurat Ajoke Foundation.
The Executive Director of the foundation, Monsurat Oluwatoyin Ibrahim, described the incident as heartbreaking. She said the child, who was discovered with multiple bruises and injuries, has since been admitted at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital for urgent medical care.
“This case is a sad reminder that too many children, especially orphans and those living with relatives, suffer silently in the hands of those who should protect them,” she lamented.
Ibrahim commended the swift intervention of Mrs. Sekinat Temilade Halid, the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Women Affairs, Children and Social Welfare, whose prompt action ensured the child was rescued and given medical attention.
She urged families, particularly women entrusted with the care of children, to nurture them with love and dignity, stressing that no hardship or situation justifies child abuse.
