The Osun State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers in connection with the gruesome murder of a commercial motorcyclist in Iwo.
The Command also recovered a stolen Toyota Camry in a separate operation.
Police spokesman, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, who confirmed the arrests in a statement issued in Osogbo earlier today, gave the names of the suspects as Habeeb Adedayo (27) and Akeem Fawas (19).
According to the statement, the suspects were tracked down by detectives to Ibafo, Ogun State, on August 16 while attempting to sell a motorcycle belonging to the deceased, Segun Olatunji (26).
Ojelabi said the suspects had confessed during interrogation that they posed as farmers and lured Olatunji to convey them from Odo-Ori, Iwo, to a farmland along Olupon with a promised fare of N5,000. Upon reaching a lonely spot, they stabbed him in the neck and slit his throat before making away with his motorcycle.
“The principal suspect, Habeeb Adedayo, further admitted that he had carried out three previous robbery operations in Iwo with other accomplices still at large,” the statement read.
Exhibits recovered from the suspects include one Bajaj motorcycle and a knife.
In a related development, the Prompt Response Unit of the Command, on August 29, intercepted a golden Toyota Camry (Reg. No. JZ 756 ABC) during a stop-and-search operation at Unity Junction, Ikire.
The driver, on sighting the officers, abandoned the vehicle and fled. Investigations later revealed the car was stolen from a park at Owode Ede earlier that day.
Ojelabi added that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect, while the two arrested suspects will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, urged commercial motorcyclists in the state to be vigilant and cautious of passengers they convey in the course of their daily business.
