The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Isaac Omoyele narrowly escaped death after gunmen ambushed his vehicle late Monday night in Osogbo.
The attack, which occurred around 10:05 p.m. along Ikirun Road near Kobo, beside Charity Hotel, took place shortly after Omoyele left the Amotekun Corps Headquarters.
He was reportedly driving home alone in his private two-door vehicle when armed assailants, riding in a moving vehicle, intercepted him and opened fire.
“I had left the office driving home with my two-door vehicle,” the Commander recounted from his hospital bed.
“When I got to Kobo, some armed men suddenly in a moving vehicle double side by side with my car and started firing. Their faces were covered, and before I could react, they opened fire on my vehicle. Bullets riddled the car. I didn’t stop. I kept driving through the hail of gunfire. I was hit, but I managed to escape.”
Medical sources confirmed that Omoyele sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital. He is said to be in stable condition and under protective watch.
However, what followed hours later added a more sinister dimension to the incident.
About 15 masked men, believed to be part of the same gang, reportedly invaded the Commander’s private residence in the middle of the night.
Witnesses said the assailants arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV, suggesting a well-coordinated and premeditated attack.
The case has since been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, with investigations said to be ongoing. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive remains unclear.
The Osun State Government and the Amotekun Corps are yet to issue official statements as the investigation continues.
