Makinde Reacts to Defections, Says Nigerians Remain The Ultimate Decides

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has dismissed concerns over the recent wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the party remains unshaken by the development.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Transportation Sub-Committee of the PDP National Convention scheduled to hold in Ibadan on November 15, Makinde, who chairs the committee, said the defections of governors and lawmakers to the APC were of no consequence to the party’s strength or its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the governor, the true power lies with the people, not political elites switching parties for personal gain.

“Governors defecting, senators defecting — I already addressed that. We are not concerned and we are not bothered because the ultimate decider here would be the Nigerian people,” Makinde stated.

He added pointedly, “The only time we will be concerned as a party is when we see hunger defect from the ordinary people on the street and join the APC.”

Makinde maintained that despite internal challenges, the PDP remains focused on reconnecting with the masses and addressing the socioeconomic hardship Nigerians face under the current administration.

He further assured that the forthcoming PDP National Convention in Ibadan would reflect unity, purpose, and the party’s renewed commitment to rescuing the nation from misrule.

The event was attended by key members of the PDP National Working Committee, stakeholders from across the federation, and members of the transportation sub-committee tasked with logistics for the convention.
