The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has condemned the recent attack on some of its students by armed hoodlums in the Moremi Estate area of the town.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution described the incident as “unwarranted and condemnable.”

He added that the attackers not only dispossessed students of their valuables but also inflicted bodily harm on some of them.

The incident occurred on the night of Monday, October 20, 2025, at Oreoluwa Hostel, located within the Moremi Estate area of Ile-Ife.

According to the statement, the quick intervention of officials of the OAU Students’ Union, who swiftly transported the injured victims to the University Health and Medical Centre for treatment, was highly commended by the University administration.

Olarewaju identified the affected students as Ogedengbe Emmanuel Oluwafemi and Emmanuel Akinribiye, both final-year students of the Department of Management and Accounting, and Olalekan David Okemiga, a final-year student of the Department of Mathematics. He said the students sustained varying degrees of injuries, including machete wounds to the head and hands, but were promptly treated and are now recovering.

Reacting to the incident, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, expressed appreciation to the officers of the Nigeria Police Force from A Division, Ile-Ife, and Oke-Otubu Division, Modakeke, for their swift response.

Bamire urged security agencies, particularly the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), to intensify patrols around student-populated areas to ensure their safety.

He also appealed to stakeholders and philanthropists to invest in building additional student hostels within the university premises.

He said this would enhance safety and allow for closer monitoring by university authorities.

Professor Bamire wished the injured students a speedy recovery and expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives.
