The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has explained why it expelled its former National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, and the National Youth Leader, Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, from the party, citing allegations of misconduct, financial misappropriation, and abuse of office.
Speaking after the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rufus Aiyenigba, said the decision followed a series of investigations that began after the officers were suspended in June this year.
According to Aiyenigba, the action became necessary after the adoption of the report of the Disciplinary Committee and a subsequent White Paper, both of which confirmed the allegations against the affected officers.
“The expulsion of Alhaji Shehu Gabam and Mr. Ogbonna Uchechukwu was not taken lightly. It was based on clear evidence of misconduct, financial irregularities, and gross abuse of office that contravened the party’s constitution,” he said.
He explained that the NWC had on June 24, 2025, suspended Gabam, Uchechukwu, and the National Auditor, Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, following a prima facie case of financial impropriety and gross misconduct.
To ensure fairness, an independent Disciplinary Committee was constituted on July 4, 2025, which conducted a two-week investigation and submitted its findings on July 18, 2025. The NWC then reviewed the report and adopted a White Paper on August 15, 2025, before reaching Thursday’s resolution.
The party also announced the expulsion of eight other members — Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu — over acts of disloyalty and illegal entry into the party’s secretariat in July.
Aiyenigba alleged that the expelled members were caught by security operatives with sensitive party documents and valuables removed from the secretariat, adding that they are currently facing criminal prosecution.
“We took this action to restore integrity, discipline, and internal order within the SDP. The party must stand for transparency, accountability, and respect for due process,” the spokesman declared.
He maintained that the decision was unanimously adopted by members of the NWC and takes immediate effect from Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Aiyenigba reaffirmed that the SDP remained committed to its founding principles and to repositioning the party for greater national relevance ahead of future elections.
“Our message is clear: no individual is above the party. We will continue to strengthen our internal systems to prevent similar infractions in the future,” he added.
