After four days in custody, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, alongside human rights lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and rights activist Omoyele Sowore, have been released from Kuje Prison, Abuja.
Their release followed mounting public concern and social media agitation over what many described as an unlawful detention by security operatives.
Confirming his release, Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate, took to his Facebook page on Monday evening, expressing relief at regaining his freedom.
“Leaving Kuje Prison in Abuja after being detained there illegally for four days by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun. #FreeNnamdiKanuNow,” Sowore wrote.
In a follow-up post, he reiterated, “Leaving Kuje Prison in Abuja after being detained there illegally for four days.”
Osun Spring Newspaper recalls that the trio had been detained over activities related to ongoing calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who remains in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Their arrest had sparked reactions from civil rights groups and pro-democracy campaigners, who demanded their immediate release, describing the detention as a clampdown on free speech and activism.
As of press time, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor the Federal Government had issued an official statement regarding the circumstances of their detention and release.
