Tension flared at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday as supporters loyal to the party’s North Central Vice Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman, staged a protest at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
The demonstrators, who arrived at the secretariat in large numbers, chanted solidarity songs and demanded the immediate resignation of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.
The protest followed last week’s declaration of Abdulrahman as the new Acting National Chairman, deepening the leadership crisis that has engulfed the opposition party.
The turmoil escalated after the suspension of the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, for one month.
In a counter move, the faction loyal to Anyanwu held a separate gathering in Abuja, where it announced the suspension of the Damagum-led NWC, further widening the division within the party.
Protesters at Wadata Plaza accused the current leadership of poor management and vowed to take back control of the party’s national secretariat for Abdulrahman’s faction.
Security operatives were swiftly deployed to the area to prevent a possible clash as tensions rose between the rival groups.
The PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, continues to grapple with deep internal wrangling amid calls from stakeholders for urgent reconciliation and stability.
