Zohran Kwame Mamdani has been elected as the first Muslim mayor of New York City.
This comes after securing a narrow but decisive victory with just over 50 per cent of the total votes cast in mayoral election.
Mamdani, a 34-year-old lawmaker and son of Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani and Indian filmmaker Mira Nair, overcame a barrage of attacks and smear campaigns to claim the historic win.
His victory reflects a generational shift and growing political consciousness among young Americans.
