The aftermath of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Elective National Convention in Ibadan has continued to split opinions across party lines, with the Southwest zone applauding the exercise while the Rivers State chapter dismissed it as illegal.
The PDP Southwest Zone, in a statement on Sunday by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Chief Sanya Atofarati, praised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for what it described as his “courageous leadership” in ensuring the success of the convention.
Atofarati said Makinde “saved the party from aggressors” and restored public confidence in its internal democratic processes.
He said, “Governor Makinde has once again demonstrated exemplary leadership.
“He can best be described as the biblical Moses of the PDP whose collaborative efforts with other leaders have given the party a new lease of life.”
The zone also congratulated the newly elected members of the National Executive Committee, noting that the peaceful conduct of the convention in Ibadan signaled a positive turning point ahead of the 2027 elections.
But in a sharp contrast, the Rivers State chapter of the party rejected the entire outcome of the convention, insisting it would not stand.
In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Kenneth Yowika, the chapter argued that two Federal High Courts had issued orders restraining the PDP from holding the convention, while only an Ibadan High Court gave a conflicting approval.
Yowika said the boycott of the convention by the Independent National Electoral Commission validated the chapter’s position.
“The ill-advised convention cannot withstand legal scrutiny,” the statement read. “We rest our faith solely on the judiciary to address this illegality.”
He added that the dissolution of certain state executives during the exercise further exposed what he called the leadership’s disregard for the rule of law.
