The Federal Government on Friday directed the closure of 41 federal unity colleges across the country following renewed attacks on educational institutions in several states.
The directive was contained in a memo issued by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir, who signed on behalf of the Minister of Education.
She explained that the measure became necessary to forestall security breaches and protect students in vulnerable areas.
According to the circular, principals of the affected schools have been instructed to comply without delay and ensure that students are safely released to their parents and guardians.
The shutdown affects institutions in the North-West, North-East and North-Central regions, where schools have come under repeated attacks by armed groups in recent years.
Among the colleges listed for closure are: FGGC Minjibir, FTC Ganduje, FGGC Zaria, FTC Kafanchan, FTC Dayi, FGC Daura, FGGC Tambuwal, FSC Sokoto, FTC Wurno, FGC Gusau, FGC Anka, FGGC Gwandu and FGC Birnin Yauri.
Others include FTC Zuru, FGGC Kazaure, FGC Kiyawa, FTC Hadejia, FGGC Bida, FGC New-Bussa, FTC Kuta-Shiroro, FGA Suleja, FGC Ilorin, FGGC Omu-Aran, FTC Gwanara, FGGC Bakori, FGC Ugwolawo, FGGC Kabba, FTC Ogugu, FGGC Bwari, FGC Rubochi, FGGC Abaji and FGGC Potiskum.
Also named are FGC Buni Yadi, FTC Gashua, FTC Michika, FGC Ganye, FGC Azare, FTC Misau, FGGC Bajoga, FGC Billiri and FTC Zambuk.
The decision follows fresh incidents of mass abductions, including the kidnapping of students in Kebbi and, most recently, in Niger State—events that have heightened national anxiety over school safety and prompted calls for stronger protective measures.
Education authorities emphasised that the temporary shutdown is aimed at safeguarding lives while security agencies intensify efforts to curb attacks on schools.
