A senior Nigerian government official has confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe in Guinea-Bissau following the military takeover in the West African country.
The official, who spoke on Thursday under the condition of anonymity, disclosed that arrangements are already underway to facilitate Jonathan’s return to Nigeria as soon as possible.
According to the source, a multinational security team which comprising Nigerian operatives is currently on ground in Guinea-Bissau to protect Jonathan and other Nigerian nationals affected by the political upheaval.
“Relevant authorities are working closely with international partners to guarantee their safety and ensure they are brought home without delay,” the source said.
Jonathan, who has been in Guinea-Bissau for diplomatic engagements, became stranded after soldiers seized control of key government institutions, disrupting the country’s election process and escalating regional concerns.
Nigeria has joined other ECOWAS nations in closely monitoring the situation, with officials assuring that every necessary step is being taken to safeguard its citizens during the ongoing instability.
