onfusion swept through social media on Saturday after unverified reports claimed that legendary Nollywood veteran, Chief Lere Paimo (MON), had passed away at 86.
The rumour intensified when entertainment journalist and Best of Nollywood Awards founder, Seun Oleketuyi, posted on his social media pages that the actor had died—prompting an outpouring of tributes and condolence messages from fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry.
However, the claim was quickly dismissed by authoritative sources close to the actor.
The Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) firmly denied the report, stating that the Yoruba movie icon—popularly known as Baba Eda Onile Ola—is alive and in stable condition.
The association’s National PRO, Prince Adejonwo Oluwafemi Femson, urged the public to disregard the false announcement and cautioned against the spread of unverified information.
“Chief Lere Paimo MFR is not dead. He is alive and well,” ANTP clarified in its official statement, adding that the confirmation came directly from the actor’s wife.
As of the time of filing this report, the actor’s family had yet to issue its own public statement, but confirmation from his household and the theatre association has effectively debunked the viral misinformation.
Chief Lere Paimo—whose illustrious career spans more than six decades and includes iconic appearances in Yoruba classics such as Ogbori Elemosho—will clock 86 next week.
