Adeleke Faults Osun APC Over Federal Might Comment

By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has criticised the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over comments suggesting the use of federal might in the forthcoming governorship election, saying federal power should be used to promote good governance and not to manipulate elections.

The governor spoke while addressing party leaders and ward officials drawn from the 332 wards across the state.

Adeleke said it was wrong for the Osun APC to drag the name of President Bola Tinubu into claims that federal institutions would be used to influence the outcome of the August 15 governorship poll.

“The President is using federal power to deliver good governance, such as the ongoing reconstruction of the Ibadan–Ilesa Road, the student loan programme and the proposal to establish state police,” Adeleke said.

“Neither the President nor top leaders around him support the threats by the Osun APC to disrupt the forthcoming Osun polls.”

The governor urged the opposition party to stop making statements that could cast the President and the Federal Government in a negative light.

“I task the Osun APC to stop denigrating the name of Mr President and the Federal Government.

Instead of supporting him and showing the world that the number one citizen is a democrat in words and actions, their campaign slogans have been entirely anti-people and anti-democracy,” he said.

Adeleke also stressed that the people of Osun State remain committed to credible elections where the votes of the electorate determine the winner.

“Osun people are passionate about free and fair elections. Our people insist that their votes must determine who wins and who governs them.

Our duty as candidates is to present our programmes and seek the support of the electorate.

Only electoral bandits boast of rigging in a democracy,” the governor said.

He called on residents of the state not to be intimidated by threats of federal power ahead of the election.

“I call on Osun people to remain steadfast as the August 15 election approaches. Your votes will determine the winners.

No force can override the will of the people or the power of God. Those threatening federal power do not have the backing of Mr President,” Adeleke added.

The meeting was attended by party leaders and political stakeholders from across the state.
