Osun Govt Warns Police Against Accepting Poisoned Vehicle Donations

By Waliu Adetokun,

The Osun State Government has warned the Osun State Command of the Nigeria Police against accepting proposed donations of security vehicles from sacked local government chairmen, describing the move as a “malevolent and poisoned gift.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, said the planned donation by the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen was politically driven and could compromise the integrity of the police.

The government was responding to allegations by the opposition that it was politicising security issues, insisting that the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke remains committed to the protection of lives and property.

Describing the offer as deceptive, Alimi said the donation, though it may appear beneficial on the surface, was “a political bait designed to bring harm, disrepute and serious consequences to the police, both now and in the future.”

“The so-called APC council executives, who imposed themselves on the local governments without any legal backing, should not be regarded by right-thinking members of the public as credible partners in supporting security agencies,” he said.

He added that the issue surrounding the tenure of the chairmen is already before the court, with judgment expected on May 21, 2026, while a separate contempt proceeding is scheduled for May 12.

Alimi urged the police command in the state to decline the offer, alleging that the funds used to procure the vehicles were drawn from mismanaged local government resources.

“At this juncture, we advise the police to treat such donations as proceeds that may implicate the institution if accepted, whether now or in the near future,” he said.

He further called on the Commissioner of Police in Osun State and the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the command maintains its professional integrity by rejecting the donation.

“While we acknowledge that security is everybody’s business, it does not extend to accepting gifts from questionable sources,” he stated.

The government also appealed to the police to await the outcome of the pending court rulings, which it said would address the dispute over the leadership of the local governments.

Reaffirming its position, the state government said it remains committed to supporting the police and other security agencies in maintaining law and order across Osun State.
