Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sule Lamido has formally declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.
He said he is inspired by a resolve to rebuild and restore the PDP to its original ideals.
In a statement released on Monday, Lamido said his decision was driven by his lifelong commitment to democratic values, unity, and party rejuvenation.
He noted that the PDP, once the symbol of Nigeria’s democracy and stability, must rediscover its identity as a party of inclusion, fairness, and vision.
“By the grace of Almighty God, I will today, Monday, 27th October 2025, be at the PDP National Headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, to obtain my nomination form to contest for the position of National Chairman,” Lamido announced.
“My desire is to restore our great party to its founding glory, strengthen internal democracy, and prepare it to reclaim power through genuine service to Nigerians.”
Lamido, who previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and later as a two-term governor of Jigawa State, said the party needs leadership that will prioritize discipline, equity, and collective interest over personal ambition.
He emphasized that his mission is not about personal power but about repositioning the PDP as a credible alternative capable of providing hope to Nigerians amid growing national challenges.
The PDP is set to elect new national officers at its forthcoming National Convention scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The chairmanship position has been zoned to the North-West, in line with the party’s power rotation arrangement.
Lamido, along with other notable figures from the region, including former Kaduna governor Ahmed Makarfi and ex-minister Kabiru Turaki, are expected to vie for the position.
