The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has formally withdrawn from the 2026 governorship contest in Osun State.
Basiru, who had previously declared interest announced his withdrawal on Saturday during the commissioning of his political office, Alubarika House, in Osogbo.
Speaking at the event, the former Senate spokesperson revealed that he stepped down from the race in compliance with directives issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Although he did not disclose further details of the instruction, he stressed that loyalty to party leadership and respect for the President’s counsel informed his decision.
The development marks a major shift in the run-up to the APC governorship primaries, where Basiru was widely expected to be a leading contender.
