It was celebration galore for Osun State at the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State, as the state’s young athletes announced themselves in style with an inspiring haul of 25 medals — five gold, four silver, and sixteen bronze.
From the tracks to the swimming pools, the boxing ring to the gymnasium floor, Team Osun displayed grit, talent, and resilience, proving that the future of Nigerian sports is already alive in the state.
One of the standout moments came from para-athlete Adekunle Uthman, whose determination and strength earned him a historic gold medal that drew tears of pride from spectators.
In gymnastics, Semilore Adeoye dazzled with elegance and power, bagging one gold and two bronze medals to her name.
Team Osun also excelled in basketball, where the state’s youngsters combined skill and teamwork to outclass their rivals and clinch gold.
At the table tennis court, Umar Ayoola became a fans’ delight, partnering with Quyum Olawuyi to win gold in the doubles event before adding a silver in the singles category.
The taekwondo team made their mark, with Raji Naila securing gold, while Owolabi Kareemat and Oladele Mubarak battled their way to bronze medals.
The swimming pool equally brought glory, as Beatrice Ward splashed to two silver medals and a bronze, while Pelumi Adeosun showed resilience to claim three bronze medals.
In weightlifting and para-powerlifting, Zainab Oladimeji, Opeyemi Muminat Jamiu, and Adegboye Habib all mounted the podium for the state.
Even traditional sports did not go unnoticed, as Mustapha Agbaje ensured Osun’s heritage shone through with a bronze in Ayo Olopon. Boxing also had its moments of grit, with Busari Aliyah and Lawal Mujizat delivering courageous performances that earned medals.
With their medal haul, the young athletes have not only brought honour to Osun but have also signaled a bright future for Nigerian sports.
