Owa Obokun Dethrones Ilesa High Chief over Transformer Scandal

The Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III, has removed Chief Busuyi Gbadamosi as the Oba-Odo of Ilesa over allegations bordering on the unlawful removal and sale of two electricity transformers.

The announcement was contained in a statement personally signed by the monarch on Saturday, September 27, 2025.

According to the Owa, the removal followed Chief Gbadamosi’s failure to account for the 300KVA and 500KVA transformers taken from Atakumosa Market in 2023 during the reign of the late Owa Obokun, Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran.

The previous monarch had openly rebuked the chief for carting away the equipment without the consent of the affected communities—Araromi, Adeti, Palace and Odo Osunmu.

Despite repeated warnings and efforts by the late Owa to compel a return of the transformers, the matter remained unresolved until petitions were lodged before the current Owa’s Committee on Resolution of Chieftaincy Disputes, Land and Sundry Matters.

At the committee sittings, the Iyaloja of Atakumosa Market, Chief Mrs Awe, and the Araromi Youth Leader testified against Gbadamosi. The Iyaloja alleged that the embattled chief offered her ₦750,000 to endorse documents confirming the sale of the transformers, which she rejected. Similarly, the youth leader claimed Gbadamosi attempted to bribe him after moving the transformers with a truck at night.

When pressed, Gbadamosi allegedly admitted selling one of the transformers (300KVA) for ₦120,000, which he claimed to have used to transport the second to Ibadan for repairs. He, however, failed to return either of the transformers despite a 30-day ultimatum from the committee and an additional one-week directive from the monarch.

Declaring his removal, Oba Haastrup said: “In view of the unlawful and illegal removal, sale and conversion of the two transformers and an attitude unbecoming of a high chief in Ijesaland, I have decided to relieve Chief Busuyi Gbadamosi of his title as Oba-Odo of Ilesa. He shall cease to parade himself as such and must vacate the Chieftaincy house with immediate effect.”

The monarch further warned the public against recognising or addressing Mr. Gbadamosi as Oba-Odo of Ilesa henceforth.
