Relief and renewal have come to the ancient city of Ilesa as the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, Ajimoko III, has installed Professor Samuel Iyiola Oni as the new Oba-Odo of Ilesa.
The announcement of Prof. Oni’s installation was made by Isaac Haastrup, media aide to the Owa Obokun, via a post on Facebook.
This formally drew the curtain on the controversy that trailed the removal of the former Oba-Odo.
Professor Oni, a distinguished academic, is a Professor of Geography at the University of Lagos with over three decades of teaching, research, and mentorship.
He specializes in Transportation, Inland Waterways Management, Coastal Zone Management, Physical Distribution and Logistics, and Spatial Planning.
He began his academic journey at the University of Ibadan, where he bagged a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Geography between 1980 and 1983, before proceeding to the University of Lagos where he earned his M.A. and Ph.D. in Geography with specialization in Transportation in 1985 and 1992 respectively.
Over the course of his career, Prof. Oni has supervised 10 Ph.D. candidates and over 100 Master’s degree holders who today occupy respected positions in academia and professional practice.
A prolific scholar and versatile researcher, he has authored more than 60 academic publications in both local and international journals and has presented papers at over 100 conferences across the globe.
His professional affiliations are equally distinguished.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics, London; Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Shipping (NIS); Fellow of the Certified Institute of Shipping; a member of the Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG); and a member of the American Association of Geographers (AAG).
Prof. Oni’s scholarly distinction has also earned him prestigious fellowships and awards, including recognition from the Institute of Atmospheric Research, Boulder, Colorado, USA, in 2005.
