LG Crisis: Gov Adeleke’s Spokesperson Accuses Osun APC of Undermining Judiciary

The Osun State Government has accused the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) of posing a grave threat to democracy and the sanctity of the judiciary over its comments and actions regarding the lingering local government dispute currently before the Supreme Court.

The spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, stated this while reacting to allegations by the APC that the governor had bribed leaders of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to stay away from council secretariats.

Rasheed described the opposition party’s accusation as “baseless, unfounded, and a further demonstration of the APC’s disdain for the rule of law and its shameless romance with impunity in a constitutional democracy.”

“The level of impunity on display by the state APC constitutes a serious threat to our democratic life.

“The party started by falsifying a Court of Appeal judgment to claim a fake reinstatement of its court-sacked chairmen. It then ignored the same appellate court’s ruling, which affirmed the validity of the PDP-led local government executives across the state,” Rasheed said.

According to him, the opposition party, “behaving like political robbers in a lawless country,” went ahead to invade and occupy local government secretariats without any legal authority.

He alleged that the APC attempted to gain access to public funds through “layers of illegality” until they were stopped by the law.

Rasheed further noted that the judiciary had already intervened to clarify the legal position, but the APC had continued to show “utter disrespect” for the courts by debating and politicizing a matter now pending before the Supreme Court.

“The general public is aware of the illegality and criminal dimension of the APC’s actions on the Osun local government issue. At this point, we expect the opposition to submit and await the ruling of the apex court instead of throwing tantrums about the failure of its unlawful bid to take over the local government system,” he stated.

The spokesperson urged residents to disregard what he termed the APC’s “new bag of lies,” stressing that the local government workers’ union is an independent body not subject to government manipulation.

“The fight to prevent the looting of local government treasury is a collective effort of all stakeholders who need no inducement to defend their interests,” he said.
