Security operatives on Thursday arrested human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, at the premises of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
The arrest come shortly after he made an appearance at the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Eyewitnesses said the activist was accosted by armed policemen moments after stepping out of the courtroom.
He was reportedly whisked away to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.
It was learnt that the arrest followed alleged violations of an existing court order restricting public gatherings and protests within the Three Arms Zone, which houses the Presidency, National Assembly, and the judiciary.
The activist’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, condemned the arrest in a Facebook post. He described it as “an act of intimidation” and a “gross violation of fundamental rights.”
He said his client was merely exercising his right to attend a public trial and called for his immediate release.
“The arrest of Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja moments ago is preposterous. The police and the Tinubu regime are making a mockery of our judicial system. He should be freed immediately. Stop the shenanigans,” he wrote.
