Tragedy struck in the early hours of Monday as a two-storey building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State, leaving two persons dead and several others injured.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that 20 occupants were rescued alive from the debris during the ongoing search and rescue operation.

According to NEMA’s Lagos Territorial Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, the structure had shown visible signs of distress before its collapse.

He noted that emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the Nigeria Police were swiftly mobilized to the scene to coordinate rescue efforts.

Farinloye added that while two fatalities were recorded, several survivors were treated on the spot for varying degrees of injuries before being taken to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the building, located along Herbert Macaulay Way in the Oyingbo axis, may have been weakened by structural defects and poor maintenance. The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has since cordoned off the area as safety assessments continue.

Residents have called on the government to intensify monitoring of distressed buildings to prevent further loss of lives, as building collapses continue to pose a major safety concern in parts of Lagos.

Authorities have assured that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse and ensure accountability for any negligence discovered.
