We Will Rehabilitate Nigerian Refineries

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reaffirmed its commitment to rehabilitating Nigeria’s ailing refineries.

The Company assures citizens that new technical partners will soon be engaged to restore the facilities to optimal performance.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, disclosed this in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

He explained that the company has begun a comprehensive review of the technical and commercial conditions of the nation’s refineries.

Ojulari said the exercise would determine whether the facilities would undergo complete high-grade repairs or be repurposed for greater efficiency and sustainability.

He noted that the decision signals a new approach by the company, focused on rehabilitation rather than divestment, after years of unsuccessful attempts and billions of dollars previously spent on turnaround maintenance.

“The next phase involves selecting credible technical equity partners with verifiable expertise in refinery management and operations that meet global standards. Once the evaluation is concluded, we will finalise agreements and move to execution,” Ojulari said.

According to him, the rehabilitation drive is part of NNPCL’s broader agenda to strengthen national energy security and fulfil its mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) as the supplier of last resort for petroleum products in the country.

“We are repositioning as a transparent, commercially driven energy company serving Nigerians. Our goal is to deliver refineries that are efficient, sustainable, and profitable,” he added.

Ojulari further emphasised that the company’s mission is guided by a long-term vision of ensuring Nigeria’s energy independence, stressing that “the country’s prosperity and energy future must come before personal or corporate interests.”

He reaffirmed that NNPCL remains steadfast in finding lasting, sustainable solutions that will make Nigeria’s refineries fully operational and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
