The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has expressed deep concern over what it described as a disturbing escalation of violent attacks in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, which culminated in the killing of a young boy, Adesile Seebu, earlier on Friday.
In a statement signed by its Director of Media, Hezekiah Oladele Bamiji (HOB), the party lamented the growing insecurity allegedly linked to a supporter of the AMBO campaign team, identified as Akinkunmi Alabi, popularly known as Ojuyobo.
The PDP described the latest attack as “a deliberate assault on the peace of Ikire and an affront to the fundamental right of residents to live without fear.”
According to the statement, Ojuyobo, who was declared wanted during the 2023 general elections for violent activities, has resurfaced and is being fingered in a series of recent assaults on residents.
The party expressed shock that an individual with such a violent history was recently spotted in the entourage of the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) during a visit to Irewole/Isokan Local Government.
The visit, it alleged, was marred by incidents of harassment, intimidation, and physical assault on residents.
“The people of Ikire have been patient in the face of repeated provocation and violence, but their safety is now under severe threat from the activities of AMBO supporters who appear emboldened and unchecked,” the statement read.
The PDP called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other relevant security agencies to immediately intervene and restore peace to the embattled community.
“We are raising a heartfelt Save-Our-Soul call on behalf of the people of Ikire. This is not about politics; this is about human life and community peace. We urge the security agencies to arrest the perpetrators and prevent this situation from degenerating into a full-blown communal crisis,” Bamiji appealed.
The statement also urged security operatives to investigate those allegedly backing Ojuyobo’s activities and ensure that no one, irrespective of political affiliation, is shielded from justice.
“At a time when Osun is enjoying renewed peace and purposeful governance, it is unacceptable for criminal elements to plunge communities into chaos. The people of Ikire deserve justice for Adesile and protection from further aggression. The time to act is now,” the statement concluded.
