The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed readiness to welcome Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Billboards bearing Obasanjo-Bello’s image and name recently surfaced in parts of Abeokuta — notably around Abiola Way near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and Brewery Junction — fuelling speculations about her possible return to active politics.
The billboards, which featured the inscription “In Ogun State, we know ourselves. Senator (Prof.) Iyabo Obasanjo. Omo wa ni, eniyan wa ni, ara wa ni” (She is our daughter, our person, one of us), have generated widespread conversation among political watchers in the state.
Although the former senator has yet to declare her political ambition, observers believe she may be considering a return to the Ogun Central Senatorial race under the ADC platform.
Speaking with reporters on Sunday, the Ogun State ADC Chairman, Otunba Femi Soluade, confirmed the speculation but said Obasanjo-Bello had not formally contacted the party.
He said, “Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello is yet to make overtures to us. Nevertheless, we are waiting for her to talk to us. Opinions abound about the position she may be interested in ahead of 2027, but we are watching. I plan to discuss the matter with our executive committee soon.”
Born on April 27, 1967, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello is a veterinarian and epidemiologist trained at the University of Ibadan. She served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health during Governor Gbenga Daniel’s first term (2003–2007) before representing Ogun Central Senatorial District under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2007 to 2011.
After losing her re-election bid to Senator Gbenga Obadara of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in 2011, she relocated to the United States, where she has since lived and worked.
