The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has reacted to Tuesday’s confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lieutenant A.M. Yerima, over the development of a parcel of land in Abuja allegedly belonging to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (rtd).

Addressing Defence Correspondents during a ministerial press briefing on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration at the National Defence College, Abuja, on Wednesday, Badaru reaffirmed that the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command would always stand by officers carrying out lawful assignments.

“At the Ministry, and indeed the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty. We are already looking into this issue, and I assure you that any officer performing his duty within the law will be fully protected. We will not allow anything to happen to him, so long as he is doing his job diligently and professionally,” Badaru stated.

The Defence Minister’s comments came amid growing public attention over a viral video showing the FCT Minister and the naval officer engaging in a heated exchange at a disputed site in Abuja.
