The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has concluded its Elective National Convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, with the emergence of Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN) as National Chairman and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja as National Secretary.
The convention, which drew over 3,000 delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, represents a major stride toward repositioning the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Proceedings began on November 15 and extended into the early hours of November 16, with delegates participating enthusiastically in what many observers described as one of the PDP’s most organised and efficient conventions in recent years.
Senator Ben Obi, who chaired the electoral process, steered the exercise with transparency and calm authority, reinforcing the party’s commitment to internal democracy and credible leadership selection.
Dr. Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, emerged as a consensus candidate after Senator Yakubu Lado withdrew from the race, clearing the path for near-unanimous affirmation of his leadership.
For the National Secretary position, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, a former Deputy National Chairman (South), secured victory with broad delegate support.
Party insiders say the new leadership is expected to drive unity, strengthen internal structures, and craft a strategic path toward reclaiming power in 2027—an aspiration that featured prominently throughout the convention.
