0 0

Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of Olusegun “Segun” Awolowo Jr., grandson of the late nationalist and elder statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

Details surrounding his sudden passing remain sketchy as of press time, but news of his death has sparked shock and grief across the country, with many questioning the unexpected timing of his demise.

Segun Awolowo Jr., born on 27 September 1963, was a lawyer and former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), a position he held from 2013 to 2021.

During his tenure, he championed the Zero Oil Initiative aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s economy away from crude oil dependency.

His influence extended beyond Nigeria. In July 2021, he was unanimously elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organizations (TPOs) for ECOWAS member states, a role in which he worked to strengthen regional trade relations and boost export development strategies.

As a direct descendant of the Awolowo political dynasty, Segun carved a distinct path marked by public service, economic advocacy, and commitment to national development.

Tributes have begun to pour in from public officials, business leaders, and Nigerians across social media, many describing his death as “painful,” “untimely,” and “a huge loss to the nation.”

More details are expected as the family and relevant authorities release official statements.
