Armed men in the early hours of Thursday invaded St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, abducting pupils, students, teachers and a security personnel in what has become another heartbreaking hit on Nigeria’s education sector.
The attack, which took place between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., threw the quiet Papiri community into confusion as terrified children were forcefully taken away while teachers struggled to shield those they could. A security guard on duty was reportedly shot and left in critical condition.
Confirming the incident, the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora described the attack as “cruel, distressing and deeply saddening,” noting that innocent children and educators had once again become victims of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
Diocesan Secretary, Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, said security agencies were immediately alerted and have since launched coordinated rescue operations.
He added that the Church is working closely with local authorities, community leaders and the government to ensure the safe return of the abducted.
Fr. Jatau said the Diocese shares in the pain of the traumatised families, urging residents to remain calm and support security efforts.
He appealed for intensified prayers for the victims, stressing that the Church remains committed to the protection of children under its care.
“We are deeply concerned about the safety of our pupils, students and teachers. We condemn this attack in totality and pray for the quick release of all those taken,” he said.
The attack adds to a troubling pattern of assaults on schools in Niger State and other parts of the North, leaving parents anxious and communities increasingly vulnerable.
The Diocese promised to provide updates as security agencies progress in their mission to rescue the victims.
