Three Die In Kano Tanker Explosion

Three people lost their lives in separate fire outbreaks in Kano State on Friday, while one person escaped with injuries, according to details released by the Kano State Fire Service.

The agency’s spokesperson, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, confirmed the incidents in a statement issued on Saturday.

The first tragedy occurred around 1:30 p.m. at Kura Market Junction along the Zaria Road axis, when a petrol tanker loaded with 30,000 litres of fuel overturned and burst into flames.

The truck, bearing registration number NGZ 250 XA, reportedly collided with a motorcycle rider moments before the explosion.

A retired Civil Defence officer, Danlami Muhammad, placed a distress call to the Fire Service, prompting an immediate response from the Emergency Unit. Firefighters arrived to find the tanker engulfed in flames.

Four people were affected; three were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead. The motorcyclist survived the incident.

The remains of the deceased were handed over to ASP Ahmad Lawan of the Kura Police Division. Police officers, FRSC personnel, and two firefighting trucks — one from headquarters and another from Kura station — assisted in extinguishing the inferno. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

A second fire incident was recorded at about 2:45 p.m. at Hamisu Plaza on Maiduguri Road in the Taruni Local Government Area. By the time firefighters arrived, the upper floor of the two-storey plaza was already ablaze.

Three shops were destroyed, but quick intervention prevented the fire from spreading to businesses on the ground and first floors.

A fire truck stationed at the ongoing trade fair responded to the emergency. Authorities say the cause of the fire is still being examined.

The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, appealed to residents to be vigilant, especially during the harmattan season when fire outbreaks are common.

He also cautioned motorists to obey traffic regulations to reduce avoidable disasters.

Kano has witnessed multiple fire incidents this month. Earlier in November, four members of a family died in a house fire at Kundila Layin Baba Impossible in Tarauni, and over 40 shops were damaged in a blaze at Singer Market on November 11.
