Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has expressed sympathy with residents of Osogbo and neighbouring communities affected by a rainstorm that caused widespread damage on Saturday night.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor described the incident as “sad” and “unfortunate,” noting that the government shares in the pain of those impacted.
“On behalf of the government and the good people of Osun State, I sincerely sympathise with the victims of the heavy rainstorm occasioned by the devastating downpour on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in Osogbo and adjoining communities,” Adeleke said.
He added that the development was deeply troubling and assured victims of government support.
“I feel deeply touched and alarmed by the incident, and my administration will put in place everything morally and officially possible through the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) to offset the losses incurred by victims in Osogbo and other affected communities,” he stated.
The governor also directed the Ministry of Works, the Osun State Emergency Management Agency and other relevant bodies to respond promptly to the situation.
“I have directed the Ministry of Works to immediately swing into action to clear the motorways and prevent further accidents,” he said.
Adeleke, who attributed the increasing occurrence of such natural disasters to climate change, said his administration would continue to pursue policies aimed at reducing its impact.
He urged residents to take precautionary measures that could help mitigate environmental hazards, including tree planting, while warning against indiscriminate felling of trees.
The rainstorm was said to have caused considerable damage to property in parts of Osogbo, leaving several residents affected.
