Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Tuesday visited victims of the recent rainstorm in Osogbo, offering support to the injured and announcing a university scholarship for the son of a deceased victim.
The governor moved round key medical facilities in the state capital, including Asubiaro General Hospital and the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where victims are currently receiving treatment.
He also visited the police barracks in the Oke Fia area, which was severely affected by the storm.
At Asubiaro General Hospital, Adeleke expressed sadness over the death of Mrs. Jemilat Tijani, who was affected by the rainstorm in the Orita Sabo area of Osogbo. He used the occasion to announce a scholarship for her son, Farouk Tijani.
“This is really sad. I hereby offer her son, Farouk Tijani, a university scholarship through Osun State University.
Once his admission process is concluded, the Secretary to the State Government is to take up the scholarship offer,” the governor said.
Speaking at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Adeleke described the rainstorm as a regrettable natural disaster and warned of the growing impact of climate change.
“Climate change is real and we must act decisively.
“That is why our government from day one prioritised mitigation actions as a response to the climate change threat. Osun has garnered several awards from local and international bodies on our pre-emptive climate policies”, he said.
He added that the state government would intensify public sensitisation efforts across communities, noting that relevant officials had already issued technical briefings on the incident.
Earlier, the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi, had conducted an on the spot assessment of the affected areas alongside members of the State Executive Council and emergency response agencies.
At the police barracks in Oke Fia, Adeleke assured affected officers of government support, stating that efforts were underway to document the extent of the damage and seek additional assistance.
“This is really unfortunate. Our officials have taken inventory.
“The scale of destruction is widespread. Beyond our local efforts, we are reaching out to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as the National Economic Council. We must bring succour to the victims,” he said.
Among the dignitaries who accompanying Mr governor are Secretary to the state government, Teslim Igbalaye and other members of the State Executive Council.
