Police Warn Political Thugs Over Billboard Vandalisation in Osun

By Waliu Adetokun, Osogbo

The Osun State Police Command has condemned the recent vandalisation and destruction of billboards and other government symbols across the state, describing the acts as criminal and a threat to public peace.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, the command said the destruction of public property amounted to “a direct attack on public property, constituted authority, and the relative peace currently being enjoyed in Osun State.”

The police warned that such acts were capable of creating tension, causing unrest and undermining efforts aimed at sustaining peace in the state.

The statement urged political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and in line with the Electoral Act.

“The command therefore urges all political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities within the ambit of the law and in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act,” the statement said.

It further advised political actors to embrace tolerance, lawful conduct and peaceful engagement, while avoiding actions capable of disrupting law and order.

CP Ibrahim Gotan also warned individuals or groups involved in the vandalisation to desist immediately, stressing that the command would not tolerate any act capable of threatening public peace.

“The Command will not tolerate any form of criminality capable of disrupting public peace,” the police commissioner warned.

The command disclosed that investigations had commenced to identify and prosecute those behind the incidents.

Residents were also advised to remain law-abiding, avoid taking the law into their hands and report suspicious movements or individuals linked to such acts to the nearest police station.

The police reassured residents of their commitment to protecting lives and property, while calling on stakeholders to support efforts to preserve public infrastructure and maintain peace across the state.
