The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that three prominent opposition figures—Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)—are exploring a potential alliance to contest the 2027 presidential election.

This was disclosed by the PDP deputy national spokesman, Ibrahim Abdullahi, when he appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme on Monday.

He revealed that the trio are considering uniting their forces to mount a formidable challenge against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi emphasized that the opposition leaders are prepared to put aside personal interests to form a strong coalition aimed at addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues, including widespread hunger and insecurity.

Abdullahi acknowledged that the PDP’s past electoral struggles were partly due to internal conflicts and defections, including the exits of key figures such as former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Peter Obi.

He noted that the absence of these leaders was a significant setback for the party, which could have otherwise had a better chance of winning previous elections.

He elaborated that if Obi, Kwankwaso, and others had remained in the PDP, their combined influence might have changed the outcome of the election.

Abdullahi remarked, “This APC said they defeated us with one million plus (votes), just one of these names that I mentioned would have covered that gap for us and we would have been in power today.”

The PDP official also addressed the ongoing discussions about potentially reintegrating former members such as Obi and Kwankwaso back into the party.

He suggested that a possible alliance could involve concessions and compromises among the leaders to establish a unified direction for the party.

“The goal is to alleviate the current national hardships and address the issues of hunger and insecurity,” Abdullahi said.
