The Executive Committee of the Ijesa Sports Club, Ilesa, has announced the immediate suspension of one of its members, Chief Gbenga Ajibade, following his alleged involvement in an attempted murder case currently under investigation by law enforcement authorities.
The suspension, which was confirmed in a statement signed by the Club’s Director of Social and Publicity, Hon. Kenneth Opebiyi, comes in response to disturbing reports and viral social media footage linking Chief Ajibade to a violent altercation allegedly sparked by accusations of maize theft.
The Committee, at an emergency meeting held yesterday, August 6, 2025, within the Club premises, expressed deep concern over the incident, describing the visuals circulating on platforms like Facebook as “alarming and damaging” to the reputation of the highly revered Ijesa Sports Club.
“The committee reached a majority decision to suspend Chief Ajibade until the police investigation is concluded.
“Thereafter, the Club will take appropriate disciplinary measures to address this gross misconduct, which contravenes the spirit of camaraderie and civic responsibility we uphold,” he said.
The Club reiterated its commitment to preserving its legacy as a symbol of unity, integrity, and social responsibility in Ijesaland, emphasizing that no member, regardless of status, will be allowed to tarnish its hard-earned reputation.
“We cannot allow any individual’s personal actions to stain our collective values. The Ijesa Sports Club remains a beacon of civility, discipline, and mutual respect,” the committee stated.
The Ijesa Sports Club further stressed its support for the rule of law, noting, “We abhor any behaviour that undermines the dignity and safety of fellow citizens. Justice must take its course. No one is above the law.”
