Owa Obokun Warns Against Land Grabbing, Urges Police Neutrality in Land Disputes

The Owa Obokun Adimula of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has issued a stern warning against the rising tide of land grabbing in Ijesaland.

He urged the Nigeria Police to maintain impartiality in land-related disputes pending court determinations.

The revered monarch made the call on yesterday when he received the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, during a courtesy visit to his palace in Ilesa.

Oba Haastrup, who expressed deep concern over the growing tension associated with land disputes in Ilesa and its environs, emphasized that law enforcement agencies must resist undue influence and act fairly in all matters involving contested lands—particularly government-owned properties.

“Ilesa is known for its peaceful disposition. However, we recently came close to a breakdown of law and order following a land dispute between the Leventis Foundation and a private individual.

“It was only through swift royal intervention that we averted a potential crisis,” the monarch disclosed.

The traditional ruler noted that land encroachment and questionable claims had worsened toward the twilight of his predecessor’s reign, attributing this development partly to the predecessor’s ill health at the time.

Oba Haastrup also used the opportunity to call for the establishment of more police divisions across Ijesaland, particularly in Oriade Local Government Area, where he noted a growing population and inadequate security coverage.

“We are facing serious security gaps. Our communities are expanding, but the police presence remains insufficient. I urge the authorities to consider this request as a matter of urgency,” he appealed.

In his remarks, CP Gotan assured the Owa Obokun of the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining law and order in Ijesaland.

He distanced the police from the Leventis land controversy, stressing that the command had taken no side in the matter.

“I did not authorise any individual to occupy or develop the disputed land,” Gotan clarified. “I have no direct relationship with the parties involved.”

The police commissioner commended the monarch for his timely intervention and acknowledged the important role of traditional institutions in conflict prevention and resolution.

“Ijesaland is fortunate to have a monarch with such foresight and dedication to peace,” he said.

The visit comes amid heightened public scrutiny of land administration and growing calls for responsible policing across Osun State.
