Osun Govt Denies APC’s Claim Over Arrest of Facebook User Who Threatened Governor Adeleke

The Osun State Government has debunked allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Governor Ademola Adeleke masterminded the arrest of a Facebook user who issued a direct death threat against the governor.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Thursday and signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the government insisted that the matter had nothing to do with politics but concerned the personal safety of the state’s chief executive.

“We urge the public and the police authorities to know that the issue is not about politics but about the life of a state governor. No threat to life should be taken lightly,” Alimi stated.

He accused the Osun APC of misleading the public and the police by alleging that the arrest was carried out by the CSO and officers from the Osun Government House, stressing that the operation was conducted in Ibadan by officers of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit attached to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Alagbon, Lagos.

According to the government, the arrest of the suspect, identified as Ifedolapo Gafar, followed a formal petition lodged by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of FCID.

“He was arrested around 4pm on Monday, August 4, 2025, and arraigned in court the next day. The police officers were so professional that they did not detain him longer than the law allows and decided to arraign him in Ibadan where he resides,” the statement read.

Alimi explained that the complaint against Gafar directly affected the office of the CSO, whose primary duty is the governor’s security, hence his role in forwarding the petition to the police.

Detailing the procedure, the government said the FCID officers first notified the Challenge Divisional Police Headquarters in Ibadan before proceeding with the arrest, and later returned to inform the Division after completing the operation.

The suspect was then taken to the FCID operational base in Ibadan and subsequently brought to court for arraignment.

“If the CSO to the Governor and his officers at the Government House had wanted to arrest Ifedolapo themselves, they wouldn’t have written a formal petition to the AIG at Alagbon, whose officers eventually arrested him,” the government maintained.

The statement further berated the Osun APC for what it described as “flagrant falsehoods” aimed at misleading the public and the Inspector-General of Police, while encouraging party members to cloak criminal conduct under the guise of political opposition.

“Instead of the Osun APC organising urgent training for their data boys and adults on the difference between criticisms/opposition and criminal absurdities, they are cooking up stories to justify cyberbullying and threats,” the statement added.

The government also urged social media users to operate within the bounds of the law, warning that slander, libel, sedition, and other criminal offences will not be condoned.
