The Akire of Ikire-Ile, His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdulazeez Olatunbosun Adebamiji, has taken bold steps to restore a World Bank-assisted water project in his community which has been lying in disrepair for more than a year.

The monarch, during a courtesy visit yesterday to the Osun State Agency for Community and Social Development Project (CSDP) in Osogbo, announced his readiness to commit resources toward reviving the project.

The facility, a motorised borehole system with extended tap connections across parts of Ikire-Ile, has not functioned in the last 12 months.

The monarch said the project is leaving many residents who depended on it grappling with water shortages despite the existence of a few alternative boreholes in the town.

Oba Adebamiji disclosed that the rehabilitation would cost about ₦1.75 million and the fund will cover the replacement of the borehole plate and four water storage tanks, each with a capacity of 3,000 litres.

The traditional ruler also hinted that the palace would forward a fresh list to the state agency for the reconstitution of a new maintenance committee to oversee the project, stressing that community ownership and sustainability were vital to ensuring the water scheme serves its purpose.

“Although other boreholes are in use, the non-functioning of this CSDP-assisted project has negatively affected some areas where taps were extended to. Our palace is committed to ensuring the repair and long-term sustainability of this facility,” Oba Adebamiji said.
