The Osun State Government on Thursday deepened its women-focused economic agenda with the flag-off of the Veronica Adeleke Women Empowerment Scheme (VAWES), implemented in partnership with the Springtime Development Foundation (SDF).
Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Children and Social Welfare, Mrs Oyebola Fadeyi-Awolowo reiterated his administration’s resolve to place women at the heart of economic growth
He said that no woman in the state would be left behind in the ongoing drive for inclusive development.
Under the scheme, 500 women drawn from across the state were trained in organic poultry, snail breeding, vegetable production, and cocoyam farming.
Each beneficiary also received a grant of ₦50,000 to kick-start their ventures.
Governor Adeleke explained that the initiative was not just an empowerment programme but part of a deliberate state policy to tackle poverty, expand household income, and enhance food security.
“This administration is committed to creating opportunities that will lift our women from the margins of the economy to the mainstream of prosperity. We are prioritising women because when you empower them, you are empowering families, communities, and by extension, the entire state,” the governor said.
The empowerment programme, which is to be implemented in phases, will eventually scale up to 1,000 women beneficiaries, positioning Osun as a leading state in women-focused grassroots economic empowerment.
It would be recalled that the Veronica Adeleke Women Empowerment programme is an initiative of the Springtime Development Foundation (SDF), founded by Dr. Deji Adeleke.
It was established in honor of his late wife, Dr. Veronica Imade Adeleke, who was the mother of popular Nigerian musician Davido.
