Gov Adeleke Didn’t Free Murder Suspect — Alimi Clarifies

The Osun State Government has dismissed as false and misleading a recent online publication claiming that Governor Ademola Adeleke granted state pardon to a suspected murderer who allegedly confessed to killing a friend for ritual purposes.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, the government described the report—titled “Osun: Adeleke pardons suspected murderer who confessed to slitting friend’s throat for money ritual”—as “fake, jaundiced, and mischievous,” saying it was aimed at tarnishing the image of the governor and his administration.

Alimi explained that the report was a product of deliberate misinformation and a calculated attempt to mislead the public about the recent state amnesty exercise approved by Governor Adeleke in commemoration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

According to him, the governor’s decision to pardon 36 inmates serving various sentences at the Ilesa and Ile-Ife Correctional Centres was carried out strictly in accordance with constitutional provisions and after due recommendation from the Osun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

He clarified that the official letter conveying the recommendation—referenced OSCHQ.1C/VOL.XIV/393 and dated September 25, 2025—was sent to the Attorney General of the State through the Director of Public Prosecution, and titled “Recommended list of convicted inmates with offences in both Ilesa and Ile-Ife Custodial Centres for amnesty consideration.”

The letter, signed by Mr. C.N. Inyang, an Assistant Superintendent of Corrections on behalf of the Controller of Corrections, Osun State Command, made no mention of any inmate convicted for murder, nor did it list any herbalist named Kehinde Ganiyu as a beneficiary of the amnesty.

“The claim that Governor Adeleke pardoned a murderer is not only unfounded but a reckless distortion of fact. It is a journalistically avaricious publication designed to misinform the public and malign the image of the state government,” Alimi stated.

He reaffirmed that Governor Adeleke’s administration remains committed to upholding justice, rule of law, and due process in all its actions, urging members of the public to disregard the false report and rely only on verified official information from credible government sources.
