The Super Eagles of Nigeria have finally arrived in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, following Saturday’s mid-air emergency that forced their flight to make an unscheduled landing in Luanda, Angola.
The team’s chartered flight, operated by ValueJet Airlines, landed safely at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo at 8:05 a.m. on Sunday, ending an anxious night for players, officials, and fans who had been awaiting updates on their journey.
According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the team departed Luanda earlier in the morning aboard a replacement aircraft arranged after their initial plane developed a technical fault during a refuelling stop.
Saturday’s incident occurred when the aircraft, carrying players, coaches, and officials from Polokwane, South Africa, began to experience a problem with its windshield shortly after takeoff from Luanda.
The pilot, acting swiftly, returned the plane to the airport for a precautionary landing, ensuring everyone on board disembarked safely.
The NFF later confirmed that emergency procedures were followed and coordinated with relevant authorities to secure another plane for the remaining leg of the journey to Uyo.
The Super Eagles, currently second in their qualifying group, are expected to hold a light training session later today at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as they prepare for their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic on Tuesday.
A win in the crucial encounter could see Nigeria secure a place in the global tournament, keeping alive the team’s hopes of returning to the World Cup after missing the last edition in Qatar.
