Osun Rises to 6th Position in National Climate Governance Ranking

Osun State has recorded another major milestone under the leadership of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, ranking 6th out of 36 states in Nigeria in the 2nd Edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking Report.

The report is a Federal Government initiative supported by the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP).

The 2025 report, released in Abuja, offers a detailed assessment of how Nigerian states are implementing climate policies, strengthening institutional structures, and promoting environmental sustainability.

It serves as a key benchmark for accountability, innovation, and collaboration toward achieving a resilient and low-carbon Nigeria.

Osun’s leap from 30th position in 2024 to 6th position in 2025, and second in the South-West region after Lagos State.

This has been described as a remarkable turnaround and a testament to Governor Adeleke’s visionary leadership and investment in climate action, circular economy, and renewable energy development.

Under Adeleke’s administration, the state has rolled out a number of transformative environmental reforms, including:

Increased funding for climate change programmes and projects;

Creation of a Department of Climate Change and Renewable Energy under the Ministry of Environment and Sanitation;

Monitoring and execution of climate-related projects across local government areas;

Integration of environmental education into schools’ curricula;

Regular capacity building for state and local climate officers; and

Strengthened collaboration with federal and international environmental agencies.

The report also highlighted Osun’s growing online visibility and transparency in climate governance, noting increased citizen engagement in the state’s environmental agenda.
