Tension has enveloped the ancient town of Ileogbo in Ayedire Local Government Area of Osun State following a protest by indigenes and members of the Oladunwo Compound over what they described as an unlawful installation of a new Odofin by the Olu of Ileogbo, Oba Abeeb Adetoyese Agbaje, Bamofin III.
The aggrieved residents accused the monarch of breaching age-long tradition by appointing a man from the Olujogun Compound as the new Odofin—one of the gazetted kingmaker titles in Ileogbo—traditionally reserved for members of the Oladunwo family.
According to them, the Odofin stool became vacant following the demise of the late Pa Alabi of the Oladunwo Compound, who until his death held the revered position.
The protesters argued that the Olujogun Compound already occupies the Olukotun title, which, by custom, rotates between their lineage and another family.
Speaking during the protest, a spokesperson for the Oladunwo family described the monarch’s action as “a clear violation of established tradition,” adding that it could set a dangerous precedent if not reversed.
“We are deeply disappointed by this action. The Odofin title belongs solely to the Oladunwo Compound, and we will explore all lawful and civil means to reclaim our right,” the spokesperson said.
The protesters, who marched peacefully through major streets of Ileogbo, vowed to continue their agitation until the monarch reverses the appointment. They maintained that such a breach of custom had never occurred in the history of the town.
All efforts by our correspondent to reach the Olu of Ileogbo, Oba Abeeb Adetoyese Agbaje, for comments proved abortive as his mobile line was not reachable at the time of filing this report.
