The Federal Government has revealed plans to expand its direct cash transfer programme to reach more low-income and vulnerable citizens across the country.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, disclosed this during the Oxford Global Think Tank Leadership Conference and Book Launch held in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to the minister, over 15 million Nigerian households are currently benefitting from the initiative, which was designed to reduce hardship and cushion the effects of ongoing economic reforms.
Edun noted that while recent policies have contributed to stabilising the exchange rate and curbing inflation, the government remains focused on ensuring that citizens directly experience the gains of these reforms.
“There is a deliberate effort to ease the impact of current reforms,” Edun explained. “That is why a transparent and accountable system has been established to deliver direct payments to millions of households.”
He said each beneficiary is digitally verified using their name and National Identification Number (NIN), with funds transferred electronically to either a bank account or a mobile wallet. This, he stressed, ensures transparency and accountability in the disbursement process.
Responding to concerns that some Nigerians have not received payments, Edun assured that data verification is carried out promptly whenever such reports emerge.
