The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the tragic death of a Part Two medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, who reportedly took his own life after failing his examinations.

In a statement issued yesterday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, the 200-level student of the Faculty of Dentistry (Matric No: DEN/2021/023) was said to have committed suicide yesterday, Wednesday, August 13, after learning that he would have to repeat Part Two for the second consecutive time.

Olarewaju explained that the deceased had already been repeating the class in the ongoing academic session and, upon receiving the latest examination results, was devastated to discover he would spend yet another year at the same level.

“The entire OAU community has been thrown into mourning. The student, whose father is a medical doctor, reportedly injected himself at his parents’ home in Ejigbo, Osun State,” the statement partly read.

Reacting to the incident, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simeon Bamire, described the death as a great loss to the university, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the College of Health Sciences.

He appealed to parents and guardians to encourage their children to see temporary setbacks as part of life’s journey rather than the end of it.

Prof. Bamire urged students to embrace failure as a learning curve and an opportunity to redirect their efforts toward future success.

He prayed for divine strength and comfort for the bereaved family, colleagues, and the entire university community.
