Tension has gripped Ijesa land following the death of a 35-year-old Amotekun officer, Peter Samuel Tope, who was allegedly attacked by a soldier yesterday, Saturday, July 26, 2025.

According to an incident report signed by Dr. Hon. Isaac Adekunle Omoyele, Corps Commander of Amotekun, Osun Command, the attack occurred around 5:45 p.m in Ijeda-Ijesa, in Oriade Local Government Council, Osun State.

The suspect, identified as Opejobi Fiyinfoluwa, a newly recruited soldier, was said to have returned to his hometown, Ijeda, in military camouflage and made unsettling remarks about his intent to “deal decisively” with Amotekun personnel, which he reportedly cited as part of his reason for joining the army.

Shortly after his statement, Opejobi allegedly ambushed Tope, who was riding a motorcycle, stopping him and launching a brutal assault with an object, striking his head repeatedly.

Witnesses claimed that the attack, which lasted nearly 20 minutes, left Tope unconscious and bleeding profusely on the ground.

The soldier, alongside some unidentified cohorts, was said to have fled the scene on a commercial motorcycle, leaving the victim in a critical condition. Local Amotekun operatives, alerted by passersby, rushed Tope to Wesley Hospital in Ilesa, where he was admitted with severe head injuries.

Sadly, reports confirmed on Sunday morning that Tope succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

The incident was promptly reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ijebu Jesa, while Lt. Col. Yunusa Isyaku of the Engineering Cantonment, Ede, was contacted for necessary military action against the alleged perpetrator.

“This is a tragic and unacceptable loss. We will ensure that this matter is investigated thoroughly, and justice is served,” Dr. Omoyele said.

The Osun Amotekun Command has vowed to pursue legal and military channels to ensure the arrest and prosecution of Opejobi Fiyinfoluwa and his accomplices.

Further developments on the investigation are expected in the coming days.
