It was a dramatic evening in Ilesa yesterday, Saturday, September 6, when operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps engaged a notorious kidnap and murder gang in a fierce gun battle.
The Corps eventually arrested their ringleader who had long been on the wanted list of security agencies.
The operation, which began around 5:59 p.m. in the Isokun area of the town, was led by the Corps Commander, Isaac Omoyele, who confirmed the arrest on Sunday.
The prime suspect, identified as Ayoola Samuel Awe, popularly known as Bishop Awasere, a 42-year-old man, was apprehended alongside one of his accomplices after hours of exchange of fire.
The suspects, who reportedly attempted to evade capture, were subdued through what security operatives described as “tactical decoys.”
Omoyele disclosed that hard drugs and assorted charms were recovered from the arrested suspects, while other fleeing gang members remain on the run.
“This was not a straightforward arrest. Our men came under heavy fire, but through resilience and strategy, we were able to overpower the suspects. The operation took several hours but yielded the desired result,” he said.
He further assured that Amotekun operatives were already on the trail of the fleeing members of the gang, adding that ongoing investigations would unravel more details about their operations and possible collaborators.
